Exploring Tokyo's offside areas in Asakusa, Shinjuku, Ueno and on the bank of Sumida River, I discovered these amazing structures homeless people build to survive outside. Looking closely at the shelters, you may see the subltety in which they are assembled. Repeating materials like the blue covers, wooden beams and cardbord are used to make a home in the streets and outskirts of Tokyo, a place that the filmmaker Chris Marker (”Sans Soleil”) calls an “extreme pole of survival”. As a result from this encounter, I also made the photo-series “Vehikel, Tokyo”.
